Aston Villa’s star goalkeeper and Argentina's trusted custodian, Emiliano Martinez have once again made it to the headlines. Although this one is not because of his incredible saves nor shot-stopping skills in the field, instead, the FIFA 2022 World Cup Golden Glove awardee was given a suspension which means that he is barred from the next two World Cup qualifying matches in Argentina. The decision came as a result of Martinez’s actions during two incidents in Argentina’s recent qualifiers against Chile and Colombia in September 2024. The FIFA condemned  Martinez for his “offensive behavior”. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has voiced its opposition to the ban but the governing body remains to stand firm on their decision about the ban. The incidents in question both took place in highly charged moments on the football pitch, which illustrates how Martinez’s personality can sometimes be fiery and, well, controversial. These circumstances have led him to have bad blood with FIFA. The First Incident

On September 6, Argentina was able to secure a 3-0 victory over Chile in the World Cup qualifying match. This marked their very first competitive game ever since they were able to claim their victory at the Copa America earlier that summer. Argentina celebrated for another great performance on the back of their international success, and this made emotions run very high for the team. However, for Emiliano Martinez, the celebration took a slight turn as he may have crossed a line.

Martinez has always been known for his “larger-than-life” personality and emotional outbursts. This replicated a controversial celebration he first performed following Argentina’s World Cup win back in 2022. After their match against Chile, Martines held a replica of the Copa America trophy which he had placed against his crotch. This is a mimic of the very same gesture he also made when he once won the Golden Glove award after the 2022 World Cup final held in Qatar.

The gesture received a number of different reactions. While some may have seen this as an emblem of his passion and drive, a number of significant people also viewed this as an offensive move. Perhaps the severity of the matter was due to the fact that it was given on the global stage. Martinez received a lot of criticism for his conduct after Argentina’s victory at the 2022 World Cup because he used the prestigious Golden Glove trophy in a manner that many deemed inappropriate. That moment clearly left a long-lasting impact on FIFA’s governing body, which may have partly contributed to the very reason why he was suspended from the recent World Cup qualifying match.

The Second Incident

Just 4 days after the said incident, dated September 10, Argentina faced Colombia for another crucial World Cup qualifying round. The match did not go as easy for both sides as the team fell over a close fight off 2-1 defeat. Tensions went high and the pitch ran high. And as the final whistle was blown signifying the end of the game, Martinez’s frustrations skyrocketed with the results.

As a cameraman tried to approach the goalkeeper in order to catch the drastic reaction, Martinez lashed out which led him to hit the camera with his gloves. While the moment might have been brief, it was also filled with unpleasant emotions. The encounter was caught on video and did not escape the eyes of the netizens as it quickly became a talk of the town after circulating in social media which further amplified the severity of the situation. Though it was understandable for Martinez to show such reaction after a loss, FIFA thought such behavior is unacceptable especially because they are in a professional setting wherein emotions should always be controlled, no matter how intense the situation might be.

Following the previous celebration incident against Chile, Martines’s actions may have piled up, which eventually led to FIFA’s decision to suspend him from Argentina’s next two World Cup qualifiers to be held in October.

FIFA’s Controversial Decision

FIFA’s decision to suspend Martinez for his offensive behavior comes as a reminder that no matter the circumstances, whether it be during a celebration or frustration– we must not let our emotions get the best of us, as such behavior would not be tolerated in the professional setting,  FIFA aims to always uphold professionalism and sportsmanship, particularly during prestigious and international tournaments that capture global attention. In Martinez’s defense, The Argentina Football Association (AFA) tried to disagree with the decision, saying that  while Martinez’s behavior may have crossed a line, they considered the suspension too severe. While the AFA argued that the incidents were blown out of proportion and viewed as a mere expression of his reaction, AFA also conceded that Martinez must take responsibility for his conduct, even if they opposed the extent of the punishment.

As of the moment, Martinez has been quiet and has not publicly responded to the suspension.
